1. The Shocking Blue - Venus
The song is written by the band's guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen and released in 1969 as part of their second album 'At Home'. It went number 1 in Billboard's Hot100 and has sold over 7.5 million copies worldwide. It was brought back to public's attention in 1986 when the British female pop group Bananarama did a cover of it. If you're not familiar with Shocking Blue, you should check more of them - great songwriting and Mariska Veres' amazing vocals.
2. Television - Venus
Released on Television's legendary debut 'Marquee Moon' and written by Tom Verlaine. It is believed to have references to psychedelic drugs use, in the lyrics 'You know it's all like some new kind of drug/ my senses are sharp and my hands are like gloves/ Broadway looks so medieval, it seems to flap like little pages/ I fell sideways laughing, with a friend from many stages', although Verlaine was against drug use.
3. Velvet Underground - Venus In Furs
Written by Lou Reed and originally released on the 1967 album 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'. Inspired by the book of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The song has been covered by many artists, including Beck, Dave Navarro, The Smashing Pumpikns, Christian Death, Monster Magnet, Niagara, Rosetta Stone, The Creatures.
