Handsome Furs/Davvid Project/The Barbarones

Handsome Furs/Davvid Project/The Barbarones @Sofia Live Club 09.12.10

Fresh from the madman's head comes the following words.

For the first time in my life I attended synth-pop-new wave-indie rock concert and i have to say that it was more than a good one. The evening started slowly with the first band of the night being Davvid Project. Dark, ambient synth-pop with nice female vocals. Not bad at all. I have to admit that I liked most of their songs. Alas they didn't play long.
Next to my amazement on the stage came the headliners of the concert, Handsome Furs from Montreal, Canada. One thing I didn't understand is why the headliners are second and not last. Every fuckin' concert that I've attended so far the headliner always plays last. Stupid organization I guess. But that led to people leaving the club after the canadians finished their set. Which left little audience for the third last band.
But anyway back to Handsome Furs. From all the bands tonight I liked them the most. And it's perfectly understandable as their music is the closer to my musical taste than the other two bands'. Handsome Furs' music I can describe as noisy, synth, indie rock with a pinch of punk. It's not the punk I was looking for but still I wasn't disappointed by them. Their set was fast and loud and made the people dancing. The canadians definitely knew how to keep the people's attention for the duration of their performance. Screaming did help too. Husband and wife Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry proved that their chemistry is not only offstage. This duo deserves more recognition for their unforgettable live shows. Handsome Furs are indeed a band worth seeing live. And I'm sure the locals appreciated their efforts too. Tonight they won a new fan. Or maybe a couple. Anyways, hope to see them again.
Third and last for tonight were The Barbarones. Their music was somehow more mellow and calm compared to Handsome Furs which resulted in more people leaving the place and the rest just sitting and watching. Barbarones' garage sound was a nice change after the beautiful, noisy, synth chaos of the canadians. Alas it was not enough to keep the audience moving (they were moving but in the opposite to the stage direction). Still the band left a positive impression in my mind.
Overall it was a good night. I had fun and I'm not regretting for going to see those bands. Their style was not the kind of music I'm listening normally but I have to say that it was a good idea to change the music as I'm growing bored from all this hardcore concerts I'm attending these days. The evening was well worth it!
